About Department

Introduction
Department of Ophthalmology is in existence at the institute since its inception in 2001. It sees one of the highest number of out patients daily at the hospital. Approximately 15,000 patients are examined and treated annually on out basis. Approximately 2000 surgeries are done annually which includes most advanced Phacoemulsification with foldable lens implants, glaucoma and other oculoplastic surgeries.


Since our institute is a teaching institute, we follow a strict teaching curriculum. MBBS students are taught the subject of ophthalmology through didactic lectures and clinical demonstration classes. All didactic lectures are delivered through audiovisual presentations. Paramedical ophthalmic assistant students are trained for two years.


Facilities Available in Department :

 

1. Diagnostic facilities available
- Slit lamp examination of anterior segment diseases
- Posterior segment examination using direct, indirect and 90 D ophthalmoscopy
- Tonometry and gonioscopy
- Automated perimetry
- A-scan ultrasonography
- Keratometry
- Retinoscopy

 

2. Surgical facilities available
- Most advanced technique of cataract removal – Phacoemulsification with foldable intraocular lens implantation is routinely done
- Sutureless (SICS) cataract surgery is the usual procedure done with IOL implantation in all the cases
- Pediatric cataract surgeries are done
- Glaucoma, DCT/DCR, pterygium surgeries are done
- Oculoplastic surgeries like ptosis, entropion/ectropion are done
- Ocular traumas like corneacleral lacerations, lid lacerations are routinely managed
- YAG laser posterior capsulotomy/ iridotomy procedure is done

• Departmental seminars are conducted weekly in which all the members of the department present seminars on relevant topics.
